Tolls in Italy: Complete Guide to Autostrade, Costs, and Payment Options

In Italy, most highways are toll roads. Payment is based on the number of kilometers traveled.

You can pay tolls in cash, by credit card, or through the Telepass system, which works like an electronic tag for automatic payments.

We paid everything using our Wise international credit card. If you don’t have one yet, it’s worth getting it to save on international fees.

Always keep your toll receipts as proof during the trip.

Types of Tolls in Italy

Pay-as-you-go toll

This is the conventional system, you pass through the toll booth and pay with cash, card, or Telepass. Be careful not to enter the Telepass lane if you don’t have it in your car. Each lane accepts a different payment method, so check the signs before choosing.

Ticket-based toll (Casello) by distance

Here, you collect a ticket when entering the highway and pay when exiting, based on the distance traveled. Don’t lose the ticket! On our first week in Italy, we mistakenly entered the Telepass lane. Since we were blocking traffic, a guard waved us through, but we left without a ticket. At the next toll, we had to explain everything to the attendant. She asked where we entered and charged us accordingly. It was stressful because we didn’t speak much Italian at the time—trying to explain with gestures was quite an adventure 😂

Online tolls

Some roads don’t have physical toll booths but instead display signs instructing you to pay online. Stay alert because you must complete the payment within 15 days after using the road, otherwise you’ll get a fine. Payment is made by entering your car’s license plate and travel date on the official website, and it can be completed with a credit card.
