Where is Val di Mello?
It’s located in Northern Italy, in the Lombardy region, Sondrio province. Nestled in the Alps, this enchanting valley is about a two-hour drive from Milan, roughly 130 km away.
Parking
Parking is available in the Comune of San Martino, and from there it’s about a 4 km walk into the heart of the valley. Plan at least 3 to 4 hours to enjoy the stunning landscapes at a relaxed pace.

From Milan
Milan is the most common starting point for visitors heading to this alpine paradise. From there, you can rent a car and drive for about two hours to the valley. The drive is smooth and offers amazing views of the Alpine scenery.

By Public Transport
If you prefer public transport, take a train from Milan to the town of Morbegno. The train ride takes about an hour and a half. From Morbegno, you can catch a local bus or taxi that will take you directly to Val di Mello.
Best Time to Visit Val di Mello
The best time to visit Val di Mello is in May and June (spring) and September and October (autumn). The weather is pleasant, the valley is less crowded, and the trails are perfect for hiking and outdoor activities. During the European spring and summer (April to September), nature is in full bloom, making it ideal for hikes, climbs, and picnics — we went at the end of June and, despite the heat, the walk was very enjoyable. In autumn (October and November), the golden leaves transform the valley into a peaceful retreat away from the crowds. In winter (December to March), snow covers the landscape, turning it into a postcard-perfect destination for skiing and snow hikes.
Where to Stay When Visiting Val di Mello
If you’re based in Milan, you can easily visit and return the same day. However, for a more immersive experience, consider staying in one of the local campgrounds or guesthouses in the valley. Spending the night allows you to truly enjoy the calm and beauty of Val di Mello.
