The Adunata Nazionale degli Alpini is a major annual gathering of the Alpini, Italy’s mountain troops. Now in its 96th edition, the event brings together veterans, active soldiers, and thousands of supporters in a different Italian city each year. It’s a celebration filled with parades, music, traditions, local food, and national pride. Moreover, it is a time of reunion, tribute, and joy for all generations. If you love Italian culture and want to experience authentic local events, this festival is perfect for you!
Who Are the Alpini
The Alpini are one of the oldest and most respected units of the Italian army. Founded in 1872 to protect the northern mountain regions of Italy, especially the Alps, they are admired for their courage, endurance, and of course, their iconic feathered hat (cappello alpino)—a symbol of honor and tradition.
Beyond their military role, the Alpini are deeply involved in social and volunteer work. Over the years, they have become true local heroes, admired across generations. It’s common to see Italians get emotional when speaking about the Alpini—they represent an Italy that takes pride in its history.

About the Adunata degli Alpini Festival
Picture a small Italian town suddenly filled with thousands (sometimes millions!) of people dressed in green uniforms, singing, drinking, and celebrating. That’s the Adunata degli Alpini, one of the most exciting and unique events in Italy, held every year in May.
How Was the 2025 Adunata?
In May 2025, the charming town of Biella, in Piedmont, hosted the 96th Adunata Nazionale degli Alpini. More than 100,000 Alpini, both active members and veterans, joined the celebration, which united generations with a common purpose: honoring history, unity, and the Alpine spirit.
We had the honor of attending this year, and honestly, it’s impossible not to be moved by the energy of the participants and their families! The streets of Biella were filled with applause as thousands watched the long parade. Brass bands and colorful flags from regional sections made the city come alive with sounds, colors, and pride—a contagious energy that only those who experience it can truly understand! It was simply breathtaking! 🤩

During the parade, we also saw groups from other countries, representing Italian-descendant communities that keep the Alpini traditions alive abroad. That was amazing to witness!

When Does the Adunata degli Alpini Festival Take Place?
The Adunata is held every year, usually in May. Each edition is hosted by a different Italian city, and preparations often begin months—or even years—in advance.
Purpose of the Adunata degli Alpini Festival
More than just a celebration, the event aims to honor both active and veteran Alpini. In addition, it’s a reunion for comrades-in-arms and their families, keeping the spirit of tradition alive.
Which Cities Have Hosted the Adunata?
The Adunata has taken place in several cities, including Milan, Venice, Turin, and towns across the Dolomites. Each host city turns into a massive celebration.
Where Is the Next Adunata degli Alpini in Italy?
The next edition is already confirmed: Genoa, from May 8 to 10, 2026! So, if you’re planning to visit this region next year, be sure to include this experience in your itinerary.
Other Fun Facts About the Event
- The Alpini have their own hymns and traditional songs, often sung in regional dialects.
- During the event, you’ll find stalls offering craft beer, local dishes, and Alpini souvenirs.
- The “Alpini tent” (a kind of improvised camp with large tents) is where many of the gatherings and parties take place.
What to Do During the Event?
Besides watching the official parade (which is truly moving!), you can also:
- Visit historical exhibitions about the Alpini.
- Take kids to the amusement park. In Biella, there was even a Ferris wheel!
- Enjoy concerts and cultural performances.
- Shop at local product markets.
- Chat with the Alpini themselves—they love sharing stories and taking photos!

Typical Foods You Must Try
Like any great Italian event, food is a highlight! Some of the most popular dishes include:
- Grillata Mista: An Italian-style barbecue with grilled meats such as sausages, ribs, and pork or chicken cuts, usually served with potatoes or vegetables.
- Porchetta Toscana: Bread filled with seasoned roasted pork.
- Giant Mortadella Sandwich: A festival classic! We even took a picture with it in Biella because it was so unique 😂

- Alpine Cheeses: Local cheeses from the Alpine regions.
- Craft Beers: Brewed in northern Italy’s mountains.

Other Useful Tips
- Accommodation: Book well in advance, as cities fill up quickly.
- Transport: Prefer trains or special buses organized for the event. Cities usually close to traffic, so cars can’t enter and parking becomes tricky. In Biella, for example, there was a €10 ticket per person for unlimited rides during the 3-day event.
- What to Bring: Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, as you’ll walk a lot. Bring rain protection (May weather can be unpredictable!) and lots of energy.
- Language: Even if you don’t speak Italian, the friendliness of the Alpini and locals will make you feel at home.
- The event is Pet Friendly.
