The Maldives, officially called the Republic of Maldives, is a small country made up of more than 1,000 islands. They are located in the Indian Ocean, near Sri Lanka and India, on the Asian continent.

The Atolls of the Maldives
The map of the Maldives shows over a thousand small islands organized into 26 main groups, known as atolls. These atolls form rings of coral reefs that surround clear blue lagoons. The capital, Malé, lies in one of the southern atolls and appears on the map as a key point, usually marked with a symbol indicating the nation’s capital.
Each atoll has unique features, with coral reefs that create stunning underwater landscapes for diving and snorkeling. Many islands remain uninhabited, preserving their wild and untouched beauty. Others have been transformed into world-class luxury resorts, offering exclusive accommodations and services — perfect for honeymooners or anyone seeking peace and tranquility surrounded by breathtaking scenery.
How to Get to the Maldives
Traveling to the Maldives is a unique experience, but you need to be prepared for a long journey, as there are no direct flights from most countries or other continents. Usually, the trip requires at least one connection, and the total travel time often exceeds 20 hours, considering layovers and time zones.
Depending on the airline and point of departure, there are two main routes most travelers use:
- Via Europe – Many international flights depart from major hubs such as Paris (Air France), Frankfurt (Lufthansa), or London Heathrow (British Airways).
- Via the Middle East – Another very popular option is flying with Gulf carriers like Emirates (via Dubai), Etihad (via Abu Dhabi), or Qatar Airways (via Doha). These routes usually offer more flight options and convenient connections.
When you land at Velana International Airport (MLE), in Malé, the capital of the Maldives, you’ll need an additional transfer to reach your resort or chosen island. This transfer can be done by domestic flight, seaplane, or speedboat, depending on the distance.
One way to make the trip more enjoyable is to plan a stopover at your connection airport. This allows you to rest, explore a new city, and make the long journey less exhausting.
With early planning, flight research, and understanding of all steps, arriving in the Maldives will already feel like part of the unforgettable experience of visiting this paradise.
Best Time to Visit Maldives
The Maldives has a tropical climate, with temperatures between 26°C and 31°C year-round. The best time to go is from January to April, when rainfall is lower and the sea is clearer. This is high season, so prices are higher. From May to October is the rainy season, when prices drop. But that doesn’t mean it rains every day. In recent years, rainfall has been unpredictable. So don’t worry too much about it. The best time to visit is simply when you can!

On local islands, customs follow traditions strongly influenced by Islam. Therefore, travelers should dress modestly and respect local practices. Moreover, alcohol consumption in public is not allowed in these areas.
On the other hand, in resorts the rules are more flexible. Guests are free to wear swimwear and also consume alcoholic drinks, since these areas are mainly designed for international tourism.
However, on some non-tourist islands there are so-called Floating Bars. These bars operate on boats anchored a bit offshore. We tried to visit one in Maafushi, but we couldn’t find clear information. Nobody spoke openly about how to get there because, after all, this practice is considered illegal. In the end, we decided not to go.
