Lake Tovel

If you dream of exploring Northern Italy and are looking for unique destinations, Lake Tovel is a hidden gem in the Dolomites that should definitely be part of your itinerary. This crystal-clear lake will surprise you not only with its natural beauty but also with the peaceful atmosphere of a place that remains well-preserved. It is the perfect destination for travelers who enjoy nature, hiking, and postcard-like landscapes. In this complete guide, you will discover what to do at Lake Tovel, how to get there, where to stay, and the best tips to make your trip unforgettable.

History of Lake Tovel

Lake Tovel became famous in the past as the “Red Lake,” because until the 1960s its waters would turn red due to a rare type of algae. This natural phenomenon eventually disappeared as a result of environmental changes. Today, the story of this unique occurrence is a curiosity that continues to attract travelers who are passionate about science and nature. The lake is located inside the Adamello Brenta Nature Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is one of the most popular attractions for those visiting the Dolomites. In addition, it is the ideal destination for travelers who want to combine culture, history, and breathtaking landscapes in a single trip.

Where is Lake Tovel Located?

Lake Tovel is located in the province of Trento, within the Trentino-Alto Adige region of Italy, one of the most beautiful areas in the north of the country. Surrounded by the mountains of the Adamello Brenta Nature Park, it offers some of the most impressive views of the Italian Alps. Because of this privileged location, the lake is a strategic base for exploring not only the Dolomites but also the valleys and historic towns nearby.

How to Get to Lake Tovel

Driving is the most convenient way to reach Lake Tovel. The road is well signposted from Tuenno, and along the way, there is a checkpoint where visitors receive instructions about parking. It is at this checkpoint that you must pay the parking fee.

If you are planning to rent a car, we recommend using DiscoverCars, where you will find the best options. Moreover, you can compare prices and read reviews from different rental companies before making your decision.

Parking prices and opening hours

During the high season, access to the lake is regulated, and parking prices may vary. For example, in August 2025, the fee for cars was €18 for the entire day. However, outside this period, the usual cost is €15. Visitors arriving after 3:00 pm pay less (between €12 and €14). For motorcycles, the fee ranges from €5 to €6, while motorhomes are charged between €22 and €27.

The parking area is open from 08:00 am to 05:00 pm, and the ticket must be placed on the car dashboard. This fee contributes to the preservation of the park and the maintenance of the hiking trails.

Parking lots available

Lake Tovel Parking Map
Lake Tovel Parking Map
  • P1 Lago (0.2 km from the lake) → the closest one, but with limited spaces.
  • P2 Lavacel (1.5 km from the lake) → easy access and just a short walk to the lake.
  • P3 Glare (2.7 km from the lake).
  • P4 Tamburello (4.3 km from the lake).
  • P5 Capriolo (4.8 km from the lake) → usually used when the other lots are already full.

When you purchase a parking ticket, you also receive a pass that allows you to use the park’s official shuttle bus. This van runs between all parking lots (P2 to P5) and drops visitors close to the lake entrance. You can use the shuttle both ways, with no extra cost beyond the parking fee.

➡️ Our recommendation: It is worth taking the shuttle to reach the lake. This way, you will have more time to enjoy the panoramic views, which are simply spectacular, and you will also save energy to explore the lakeside trails at a more relaxed pace. In fact, the trails around the lake offer much more stunning views than the road between the parking lots and the lake itself.

What to Do at Lake Tovel

Besides admiring the breathtaking landscape and its crystal-clear waters, there are several activities that make the visit even more special. One of the highlights is the Spiaggia Bianca Lake Tovel, a small beach with light sand and white stones that contrast beautifully with the turquoise-green tones of the lake. Another unmissable experience is the circular trail around Lake Tovel, which stretches for about 4 km and can be completed in approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. The path is well marked, accessible for most visitors, and offers different perspectives of the lake and the surrounding mountains. Therefore, it is an excellent way to fully appreciate the scenery from multiple angles.

When to Visit Lake Tovel

The best time to visit Lake Tovel is between June and September, when the weather is pleasant and the water reveals its most intense shades of blue and green. During autumn, the landscape transforms into golden tones, making it a perfect season for photography. In winter, however, the lake can freeze, offering a unique view for snow and mountain lovers. Therefore, the best season depends on the type of trip you are looking for: sunny days for hiking or magical snow-covered scenery.
