Boat Rides

Rent a pedal boat or a small rowboat and enjoy a relaxing cruise on the lake’s crystal-clear waters.

Tre Cime di Lavaredo

One of the icons of the Italian Alps, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo are three striking rock towers that dominate the skyline. Hiking the 10 km loop around these giants feels unforgettable—every viewpoint reveals a new, spectacular angle. The trail starts from the Rifugio Auronzo parking area, not far from the lake.

Cadini di Misurina

The Cadini di Misurina trail is a famous Dolomites hike. Known for its dramatic scenery, it delivers sweeping views of jagged peaks and valleys. This moderate 3.6 km route is accessible to many hiking enthusiasts and is especially popular with photographers thanks to its panoramic vistas. The trail also begins at the Rifugio Auronzo parking lot, near the lake.

Rifugio Bosi

Near the lakeshore, Rifugio Bosi is a classic mountain hut that supports hikers and explorers. It serves meals and offers shelter, which makes it a perfect stop to soak in the scenery and recharge.

Col de Varda Cable Car

If you want to admire Lake Misurina from above, the Col de Varda cable car is a must. It takes you to a panoramic viewpoint with breathtaking vistas of the lake and surrounding mountains.

Misurina, the spoiled and only daughter of Sorapis—the mountain king—was beautiful, selfish, and demanding, and her father rarely denied her anything.

One day she discovered a magic mirror in the hands of a mountain fairy, a mirror said to grant wishes. Consumed by vanity, she pressured her father to get it. To guard the mirror given by the fairy, Sorapis turned himself into a mountain. He accepted his fate out of love for Misurina.

When Sorapis handed Misurina the mirror, she didn’t understand his sacrifice. However, as she watched him become a mountain, she realized her mistake and cried so much that her tears created Lake Misurina.

  • The Mirror: It symbolizes vanity and the consequences of selfish whims.
  • Sorapis: He represents sacrifice and a father’s unconditional love.
  • Misurina’s Tears: They symbolize regret and deep sorrow, showing how selfish wishes can bring more pain than joy.

Today, Lake Misurina draws visitors for its serene beauty and the dramatic Dolomites backdrop. Travelers come for the scenery and the lake’s mystical aura. Although bittersweet, Misurina’s legend teaches a timeless lesson about love and vanity.

The best time depends on the experience you want. Summer, from June to August, brings long, sunny days—ideal for hiking and outdoor activities. Winter, on the other hand, blankets the landscape in snow and kicks off the ski season.

By Plane

There are no direct flights from Brazil to airports near the Dolomites. If you’re flying from Brazil, the best-value fares usually arrive in Rome or Milan. Then take another flight to Venice, Verona, or Treviso—or continue by car, train, or bus.

By Car

Reaching Lake Misurina by car is straightforward. Plus, you’ll find parking right on the lakeshore.

We recommend driving because you can easily combine this stop with other lakes in the region. We paired Misurina with Lago di Braies, Lake Dobbiaco, and Lake Landro.

By Train

Take a train to the town of Dobbiaco, then continue by taxi or bus to the lake.

We recommend Omio for buying train tickets in Italy, since it shows major operators and lets you compare schedules and fares.

By Bus

Several towns offer buses to Lake Misurina, and some routes stop very close to the shore. For example, from Cortina d’Ampezzo, bus number 030 departs the bus station and arrives almost at the lakeside.

Staying right on the lakeshore gives you spectacular views, instant access to the water and trails, and the chance to watch sunrise and sunset mirrored on the glassy surface—plus cozy hotels and chalets on the edge of the water. Additionally, the village of Auronzo di Cadore, about 15 minutes away by car, offers more lodging and dining options while keeping a peaceful mountain vibe. On the other hand, destinations like Cortina d’Ampezzo combine full infrastructure and fine dining with easy access not only to Lake Misurina but also to other must-see Dolomites areas. Therefore, whether you want to wake up by the lake, stay in a welcoming village, or enjoy a famous hub’s amenities, you’ll find options for every travel style.

We recommend Booking.com for its wide range of accommodations and reliable user reviews.

  • Here’s a valuable tip: we went during the day and it felt like a regular, crowded lake—so we didn’t stop. However, we returned near sunset and it looked completely different. It was quiet, the mountains reflected on the water, and golden light hit the peaks. To truly enjoy the lake, go late in the day.
  • Carry some cash, as not every place accepts cards.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes because the nearby trails are quite uneven.
  • Pack layers for sudden weather changes common at higher altitudes. Even in summer, temperatures drop at the end of the day.
  • Always bring water for hikes, carry a snack, and respect the park’s environmental guidelines.
