Cozumel Travel Guide: Best Tours and Things to Do from the Cruise Port

Cozumel, Mexico

Cozumel was our last stop during our Caribbean cruise aboard the MSC Seascape. The island offers a unique and relaxing experience, with the ship docking directly at the port. While we were there, we counted another four cruise ships anchored! Cozumel is truly a meeting point for travelers from all over the world.

Where is Cozumel?

Cozumel is an island in the Mexican Caribbean, famous for its crystal-clear waters, coral reefs, and rich Mayan heritage. Cozumel offers endless opportunities to explore its clear waters and vibrant marine life, making every boat trip an unforgettable adventure.

Disembarking in Cozumel

As we disembarked, we were greeted by an impressive view: the MSC Seascape docked alongside Royal Caribbean’s massive Allure of the Seas. The port area gets crowded quickly, so we recommend heading out early to avoid missing your excursions.

Exploring Cozumel: Local Tour Operators

Right outside the port, you’ll find plenty of local tour operator kiosks. Since we hadn’t booked in advance, we quickly looked for a tour to El Cielo, which we already had on our list. We chose Playa Mia Tours and paid $110 USD per person.

We recommend booking in advance, as it was quite rushed at the time and they didn’t accept card payments. By scheduling ahead, you can review the companies calmly and also pay with a credit card.

El Cielo Tour

The catamaran tour to El Cielo included stops at Columbia and Palancar reefs for deep-water snorkeling, followed by the highlight: El Cielo, with its shallow turquoise waters and starfish on the seabed (hence the name “Heaven”). To top it off, we visited Cielito Sandbank, which had some of the bluest waters we’ve ever seen. Simply breathtaking 🙂

Transportation and Duration

From the port, we took a taxi to Muelle Fiscal for $10 USD per ride. The full tour lasted about 4 hours and 30 minutes, with 30-minute snorkeling stops at each location. The return trip by taxi back to the port took about 15 minutes.

Lunch and Amenities Included

After the snorkeling stops, we were welcomed at a Beach Club for a buffet lunch with drinks included. It was the perfect way to recharge after a morning full of adventure.

Important Tips for Visitors

During the tour, it’s important to follow environmental rules, such as not using sunscreen and wearing a life jacket to avoid contact with the seabed. These measures help preserve the fragile marine ecosystem.

Other Tour Options

Besides booking directly with local operators, you can also reserve tours through platforms like “Get Your Guide“.

Always double-check the exact docking time of your ship and confirm tour departure times to avoid any inconvenience.

Final Thoughts and Return to the Ship

Don’t miss the chance to explore the local shops, perfect for finding authentic and unique souvenirs. It’s also worth stopping by the Duty Free, which often offers better prices than those on the ship. Just be mindful of the rules regarding alcoholic beverages, such as tequila, as there may be restrictions when bringing them back on board.

The experience in Cozumel is truly unforgettable. Our trip to El Cielo was one of the highlights — its crystal-clear blue waters are among the most stunning we’ve ever seen. At the end of the day, we returned to the comfort of the MSC Seascape with the feeling of having lived something unique, carrying with us memories of a truly special day in Cozumel. 🩵⭐
